This course provides an entry point for people of all backgrounds to participate more fully in Jewish life, and can launch you on a path to authentic personal Jewish identity. You will acquire a basic Jewish vocabulary, and gain an intellectual knowledge of Judaism as well as the skills necessary to “do Jewish.”
If you are curious about Judaism, if you would like to explore Jewish life and thought, if someone you love is Jewish and you want to know more, this class is for you!
Rabbi Bridget Wynne will teach the first 10 sessions of the course at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, and Rabbis Steve Chester and Jacqueline Mates-Muchin will teach the following 10 sessions at Temple Sinai in Oakland. All are Reform rabbis who encourage students to raise questions and to enter into spirited discussions on all topics.
The class is sponsored by the Reform Movement. This two-hundred-year-old branch of Judaism includes the largest number of religious Jews in America. It has forged a dynamic synthesis of tradition and modernity that allows for an encompassing yet flexible Jewish consciousness.
Tuition for this twenty-week class includes textbooks and handout material and is $280 per individual or couple. Tuition is $195 per individual or couple for those who belong to any Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) congregation.
